Glasses are in, really in. Big, black, nerdy frames that would have made you the laughing stock of fifth grade will now give you a stylish, flaunting, nerdiness that is all the rage. Glasses emphasize the eyes, make you look smarter, and class up slinky ensembles. But, pair this accessory with the wrong hairstyle and the look can quickly turn from hot teacher to hot mess. This guide will keep you on track with tips for flattering and balancing your frames. Read on for a complete list of dos and don’ts. –– Laura Martin

Dos

Add volume. Large frames work well with fullness, especially at the sides of the face. Use volume foam before drying to add root lift, and spray throughout the day with refinish for instant thickness and texture.

Get brow-length bangs. A fringe that sits just at the line of your glasses will soften the strong line of the frames. Any shape can work, from blunt and square to side-swept and swingy. Whatever shape you choose, make sure it sits wide of the glasses.

Curl it. Waves and spirals are a gorgeous contrast to the straight edges of your lenses. Polished or tousled, texture gives you a beautiful mix of organic movement with clean geometry.

Don’ts

Go for micro-bangs. A short choppy fringe is pretty and stylish, but can look awkward with oversized glasses. If this fringe is a must for you, opt for small, wire-rimmed eye wear.

Wear a center part. Too much symmetry will give you a severe, mean librarian vibe.

Get a geometric bob. Structure can be beautiful, but too many solid lines will make you look heavy.
